The Strategy in Brief

We scanned roughly 380 festivals to build this slate: the complete official Academy Awards qualifying list (172 festivals, pulled from the oscars.org PDF updated April 2026), the North American majors, the world genre circuit, the student-award ecosystem, and the European/international shorts circuit. The 50 below were chosen on four axes: prestige (Oscar-qualifying status, industry reputation), fit (what their juries actually reward, checked against 3–5 years of past winners), eligibility (15:45 runtime, student status, premiere rules), and value (fee vs. career upside for a $2,000–2,500 budget).

The five moves

1. Protect the world premiere through fall 2026, and spend it in Jan–Jun 2027. Nearly every major fall-2026 festival has already closed, which works in the film's favor: it keeps the premiere intact by default. From our Aug 1 start we file the winter/spring 2027 launchpads (Sundance, Slamdance, SXSW, Aspen) first; they all decide by Feb–Mar 2027. There was one fall-2026 exception worth "spending" a screening on: Sitges, the single most prestigious genre festival on Earth and Oscar-qualifying. But its final deadline (Jul 16) closed before we were ready to submit, so it rolls to the 2027 cycle. The fall-2026 genre fests still open (Brooklyn Horror, FilmQuest, Nightmares, Screamfest) do not require premieres. If one accepts us, we decide then whether the screening is worth more than holding the premiere for Sundance (an acceptance is not an obligation; we can withdraw before programming locks, though fees are sunk).

2. Keep the film off the internet entirely. Sundance, SXSW, Aspen, Sitges, Brooklyn Horror, Fantasia, and most others disqualify or heavily penalize films publicly viewable online. Password-protected Vimeo screeners only.

3. Work the student assets: they're mostly free. The Student Academy Awards (free, and the single most career-changing prize available to this film), BAFTA Student (via AJ's school, contact the film department now to get on their 2027 slate), ISFVF Beijing (free), Sehsüchte (free), Poitiers, and NFFTY. One critical action item: SAA eligibility keys off the date the film was submitted for final grading: it must fall within the 2027 window (roughly late-April 2026 to late-April 2027) and within one year of graduation. Confirm the grading date with the school; email saa@oscars.org if borderline.

4. Enter Palm Springs in the over-15-minute category. At 15:45, the film competes for Best Live-Action Short Over 15 Minutes, a separate, less crowded Oscar-qualifying award. Palm Springs also explicitly counts films made during enrollment as student films after graduation (cheaper fees, extra award eligibility). The 15:45 runtime is legal everywhere on this list (tightest caps: 20 min at Interfilm Berlin and Beyond Fest; 18 min at TerrorMolins, all clear). It does exclude Cannes' official shorts competition (15-min cap); the Cannes route here is Semaine de la Critique instead.

5. Sequence around territorial premiere rules. Tribeca needs a New York premiere (so Brooklyn Horror after Tribeca decides, or skip one), SFFILM needs a Bay Area premiere, Screamfest needs an LA County premiere, Fantasia needs a Montreal premiere, Fantastic Fest needs a US premiere. The calendar section at the bottom sequences all of this.

The Winners Watch List: study these before writing cover letters

Free, verified links to recent winners at the target festivals. The first five are the closest taste-matches to Your Little Secrets; watching them shows what these juries reward and gives useful reference points for the submission notes.

Links confirmed against the source pages July 2026; streaming availability changes, if one dies, search the title + "short film" on YouTube/Vimeo. The 2026 winners (Souvenir, 32B, Beaks, Blue Heart, Marga en el DF) are still mid-festival-run and not yet online anywhere.

Submission Calendar

Budget Allocation (~$2,016 standard · ~$1,840 with Gold · fits $2,000–2,500)

Gold pricing (verified July 21, 2026)

We already hold FilmFreeway Gold, and on participating festivals the discount is a flat 10% off the standard entry fee, verified on the live listings below at the tier that applies from the Aug 1 start. Two things keep this from being a clean line across all 55: festivals on 2027 cycles have not published prices yet, and festivals that don't use FilmFreeway (SXSW, Berlinale, Semaine de la Critique, Clermont-Ferrand, BIFAN, Seminci, Interfilm) give no Gold discount at all. For the exact live total on any given day, drop the festivals into the FilmFreeway submission cart while logged in; checkout sums the Gold-discounted prices automatically.

Each verified case is exactly 10% off, so the standard fees quoted throughout this plan run about 10% cheaper wherever a festival participates in Gold. Gold also waives FilmFreeway service fees on every submission. Re-confirm at checkout; 2027-cycle prices publish when those windows open.

Spending the Extra Budget, Marketing & Promotion

With the DCP handled in-house at no cost, the budget buffer (roughly $400–650) frees up a real marketing line. Before spending a dollar, one honest premise shapes everything below: for a festival short, paid marketing does not buy festival acceptance: juries and programmers never see the ads. What it can do is (1) put the film in front of programmers directly, and (2) build the audience and social proof that festivals increasingly like to see, and that pays off once the film has laurels and screenings to point at. Spend in that priority order.

1. FilmFreeway promotion  · best ROI for the festival goal · ~$130 (Gold pricing)

Play: one well-timed email blast plus a short 3–5 day Featured run around the August submission push. We already have FilmFreeway Gold, so every promo price above is already halved (email blast $100, Featured $10/day). Gold also waives FilmFreeway service fees on every submission and trims the entry fee (10–50%, set by each festival) on any festival that opts in as a "Gold festival," so it chips away at the slate cost too, though the per-festival fees quoted in this plan are the standard rates, not the Gold-discounted ones. Reserve ~$130 for the blast plus a few Featured days.

2. Instagram as the film's home base  · highest priority, and free

Festivals favor films that can demonstrate they'll draw an audience, and the cheapest way to build that is a dedicated @yourlittlesecrets handle, started now. Post the 1950s production design, black-and-white stills, on-set BTS, cast/crew tags, and every laurel the moment it lands. Organic consistency beats spend: a steady feed is a foundation we can later point to in submission notes and boost selectively. Cost: $0: this is time, not money, and it's the single highest-leverage marketing move available.

3. Meta (Instagram + Facebook) paid ads  · supplementary, milestone-triggered · reserve ~$150–250

Paid Meta ads won't influence selection, so they're best held for specific moments rather than run "always on." They earn their keep three ways: driving turnout to a real screening or premiere, generating audience traction that can be cited in a submission, and building awareness once there's a trailer or a laurel to promote. Practical approach: small $5–10/day boosts on the best-performing organic posts, tightly targeted (period-film and genre-cinema interests; the specific festival city around a screening). Caution: don't burn ad budget on an unknown short before there's a laurel, trailer, or screening to anchor it, early untargeted spend is the lowest-ROI option on this page.

Notes & Caveats

Sources: We checked everything here ourselves against the festivals' own sites and FilmFreeway pages, the Academy's official qualifying list (oscars.org, updated April 2026), and the trade press. Fees and deadlines change constantly, so treat every number as a starting point and confirm at checkout.

Key eligibility findings baked into the list: Cannes official shorts competition excluded (15-min cap vs 15:45). BAFTA's own short-film awards are British-films-only (irrelevant here; BAFTA Student is the US-relevant route). Flickers' Rhode Island was DROPPED from the Academy qualifying list as of the 98th Awards despite still advertising it, excluded from the qualifying-value picks. Fantasia, Fantastic Fest, BIFAN, and Screamfest are NOT Oscar-qualifying (a common misconception), they're here on prestige/fit, not qualification. Telluride (main) has no shorts competition and its 2026 window closed Jul 1.
